Milestones

Our effort building a test client to do regular availability checks and more.

Phase 1 Milestone

Before creating a cloud-based end-to-end monitoring solution with multiple sensors, there were some efforts building a test client on a single host to do regular availability checks. This initial solution resulted in many false positive and false negative alarms, because the test client was a single point of failure and the design was very error prone. Based on this experience, we switched to creating a very thin sensor hardware/software combination to be run on multiple test sensors, which can send their results to a cloud backend.

Phase 2 Milestone

The new architecture using a AWS-based backend application turned out to be very robust from the start. After some fixes in the sensor software they passed the tests very reliably. Currently there is ongoing work to add more complex services to the tests, which require multiple interdependent requests to be sent, and there are many more services on the roadmap to be monitored.

Phase 3 Milestone

The installation and operation of the sensors already runs semi-automatically and can be done remotely. The device management tooling can also be fully automated, when the number of sensors reaches a certain limit.

Phase 4 Milestone

Based on customer specific requirements, there is also the possibility to implement custom logic for sensor data grouping and aggregation to create more specific rules for alarming and data analytics.

Phase 5 Milestone

If even more complex test scenarios make it a feasible solution, there is also the possibility to run the telematics service application within a virtual machine and use classical software testing tools to make the application communicate with the backend telematics services. Depending on the telematics application platform, this may also require a different sensor hardware platform with higher memory resources.

How we tackle the problem and what have we learned (so far)?

Starting out with a small but less reliable architecture, we have now managed to create a robust and extensible system with a very low false positive/negative rate, giving faster alarms than any other information source that was previously available. Therefore, we get very positive customer feedback, since they can now rely on our monitoring solution to give them instant information about service issues a lot faster than the service responsible knew about it in the past.
